I am often asked “should I tape the spine when I hone?”. Well all I can say is that I do, almost always, to avoid unnecessary hone wear which will shorten the life of the razor. Also on the odd tricky razor multiple layers can be used to change the angle of the blade to the hone. I have tried a few tapes and this Scotch Super 88 tape from 3M has a decent thickness and good adhesion when honing. It is the best I have found so far.

The tape is 3/4 inch (19mm) wide, 0.0085 inches (0.215 mm) thick and 66 feet (20.1m) long. Made in the USA.
